Conferences and Candid Conversations Fall conference season is here — and with it comes the familiar hum of conversation. Coffee cups in hand, transportation professionals gather to swap stories about summer projects, ridership trends, and the latest innovations on the exhibit floor. You see quick hugs between longtime colleagues, chance introductions that spark new ideas, and conversations that might lead to the next big thing. For me, it’s also the season when I begin to hear from both sides of the talent equation: leaders who are looking to hire, and professionals who are thinking about their next career move. The Hidden Anxiety Around Conversations Over the years, I’ve noticed a recurring theme. Whether it’s at a conference or in another professional setting, there’s often hesitation - even anxiety — about talking to a recruiter. Before almost every conference, leaders reach out wanting to discuss hiring trends and talent strategies, while individuals quietly ask for insights into potential next steps in their careers. But nearly every request comes with the same caveat: “Can we meet somewhere discreet? I don’t want to raise concerns with my team or colleagues.” The fear is understandable. Candidates don’t want to be seen as “looking” and risk jeopardizing their current roles. Leaders don’t want their teams worrying that replacements are being sought. But here’s the reality: talking to a recruiter doesn’t signal a resignation letter - or a pink slip. It’s simply a conversation. And conversations, far from being a threat, are an important part of a healthy professional life. Why Leaders Should Welcome Recruiter Conversations When I talk with leaders, I remind them: if you’ve created a workplace where people feel valued, supported, and challenged, the majority of your team will stay — even if they take a recruiter’s call. And if someone does leave because they feel stagnant or underappreciated, it’s usually the right decision for both them and the organization. That’s a healthier outcome than disengagement taking root quietly. In fact, employees who know they do have options and still choose to stay are often the most committed. They’ve looked around, weighed their choices, and decided your vision and leadership are worth investing in. Why Employees Shouldn’t Fear Leaders Meeting Talent The anxiety cuts both ways. Employees often notice when their executives are speaking with potential candidates and jump to conclusions: “Am I being replaced?” In reality, leaders talk to potential talent at conferences not because they’re replacing someone, but because they’re learning. These conversations provide insight into market trends, emerging skills, and what motivates top performers. They’re a window into the competitive landscape. Think of it like checking the weather — you don’t wait until the storm hits before you look outside. By engaging with potential talent early, leaders gain perspective on their current team’s strengths and identify future needs long before they become urgent. Making Conversations the Norm Conversations like these don’t need to happen in the shadows. They’re not signals of disloyalty or impending change. They’re opportunities — to strengthen professional networks, understand the talent market, and ensure both individuals and organizations are growing with intention. As we step into this fall conference season, let’s embrace the opportunity to learn and have candid conversations. Candid career conversations — whether with recruiters, peers, or leaders — shouldn’t be feared. They should be welcomed by all.
