According to Caltrain spokesman Dan Lieberman, the new trains will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 250,000 metric tons a year — the equivalent of taking 55,000 cars off the road. Service between San Francisco and San Jose will also take 10% less time—an added bonus for commuters. Helmed by CRC vice chair Michelle Bouchard, Caltrain began the innovative and ambitious $2.4 billion project in 2017, with the help of a combination of Federal and state dollars. The agency will gradually phase in electric trains to its existing diesel trains between now and Sept. 21, when its fleet is expected to be all-electric. Attendees at the first Commuter Rail Summit in 2022 may remember being treated to a preview of the innovative railcars created by Stadler Rail for this project.
