Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas), the top lawmaker on the House Transportation Committee’s panel on railroads, is quoted in a recent Politico article that the rail safety bill (H.R. 8996) he's been trying to push through Congress may gain traction if Donald Trump wins the presidency in November. The bill, sponsored by Nehls and Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), calls for two-person crew requirements for Class I railroads with some exceptions, enhanced safety procedures for trains with hazardous materials, and a quicker phase out of DOT-111 tank cars. Included in the proposed bill is a $100 million grant program to install telematic systems so railcar owners can track the progress of what’s inside and boost in funding for a railroad crossing elimination program. Nehls and some of the bill’s co-sponsors have been pressing House Transportation Committee Chair Sam Graves (R-Mo.) to bring it up for consideration by the Committee, but so far, that hasn’t happened.
